Medical Visa Process for India

To facilitate international patients, the Government of India offers a Medical Visa (M Visa), specifically designed for individuals seeking medical treatment in recognized and specialized hospitals or treatment centers in India.

 

Who Can Apply for a Medical Visa?

  • Foreign nationals seeking specialized medical treatment in India

  • Patients requiring procedures such as cardiac surgery, organ transplant, neurosurgery, oncology, joint replacement, renal disorders, infertility treatments, etc.

  • Attendants of the patient (maximum two attendants) can apply for a Medical Attendant Visa (MX Visa).

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity and blank pages

  • Proof of treatment recommendation from a recognized hospital in the home country

  • Appointment/acceptance letter from a recognized Indian hospital

  • Adequate financial resources to cover medical expenses and stay

 

Documents Required for Indian Medical Visa

  • Completed visa application form (online through the Indian Visa portal)

  • Valid passport and recent passport-size photographs

  • Letter from the Indian hospital detailing:

    • Patient’s medical condition

    • Proposed treatment plan

    • Duration of treatment

  • Recommendation letter from the patient’s doctor in their home country

  • Proof of residence (utility bills, ID card, etc.)

  • Bank statements or financial proof

  • Flight booking details (optional but recommended)

  1. Online Application

  2. Document Submission

    • Submit physical copies at the Indian Embassy/Consulate in your country

  3. Interview (if required)

    • Some applicants may need to attend an interview

  4. Visa Approval

    • If approved, the visa is stamped in the passport

 

Validity and Extensions

  • Initial Validity: Usually up to 1 year or for the duration of treatment

  • Multiple Entry Visa: Allows patients to travel in and out of India for follow-up visits

  • Extension: Possible if recommended by the hospital and approved by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO)
